STREAM News2/24/20 - Field Trip to Buffalo ZooMiss Frausto's 2nd and Mrs. Hill's 4th grade had the opportunity to visit the Buffalo Zoo and learn about arctic animals. They started out on a guided tour to see all of the arctic animals in the zoo and then went into the zoo's learning lab to explore more animals.
2/14/20 - St Valentine's Kitchen ChemMrs. Hill's Grade 4 class had Valentine stations. They used St. Valentine's day to practice their STREAM Kitchen Chem skills. Each station had ingredients and a recipe. When the students were done, they shared a Pretzel Dessert, Funfetti Dip and Yogurt Parfaits.
2/5 - Chinese Treasure ShipsMr. Pytlik's Grade 6 Social Studies class finished a Unit about Chinese Treasure Ships. They were a type of large wooden ship in the fleet of admiral Zheng He, who led seven voyages during the early 15th-century Ming dynasty. The students had to make ships that could float and carry cargo.
12/7 - X-Stream Games - Kitchen ChemOn Saturday, December 7th, Southtowns Catholic School students, Teagan Ferris and Marlee Hill had the opportunity to present their Kitchen Chem creation, ”Apple Delight” during the STREAM Games at St. Joe’s. Kitchen Chem consists of 12 SCS students in grades 1-4th grade. Each Thursday they meet to follow and create a delicious recipe. Last week, they made a special treat called, Apple Delight, which tastes like is an apple crisp cake.
11/13 - Arcade Academy: Pizza Box GamesStudents in Grades 1, 2 & 3 joined Mrs. Ebert in creating Pizza Box games during Arcade Academy. The kids had to make the games out of pizza boxes and recycled materials. When they were done, the students had to explain how it worked and demonstrate their project. Arcade Academy is part of our STREAM Program.
10/29 - Herschell Carrousel Factory MuseumOn Tuesday, October 29, Southtowns Catholic School students in grades 5 & 6 toured the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum. The students toured the museum, rode the historic carrousel and then participated in a STEM workshop. The kids used a cup, paper clip, dowel, and a straw to figure out how a gear works and make the dowel go up and down. When they were done, they cut our their animal and glued it to the dowel.
10/25 - Worms in the DirtThis week, the students in Kitchen Chem made a Halloween treat called, “Worms and Dirt.“ They followed the recipe to make chocolate pudding, crushed up Oreos, and then decorated their pudding cups with gummy worms and other Halloween treats!
10/10 - Kitchen Chem Ice CreamSCS students have the opportunity to participate in the STREAM Academy, Kitchen Chem. Kitchen Chem is a hands-on way to introduce young students to the life skill of food preparation. Each week, the students will meet and follow a recipe to create a delicious treat. They also will talk about planning meals, nutrition and making a grocery list. Last week, the students made vanilla ice cream!
5/23 - Butterfly ProjectMrs. Joy Katra & Mrs. Lana West's Preschool 3 year old & Kdg Readiness STREAM classes have been learning about the life cycle of the Butterfly. Starting out as tiny larva, the kids watched them turn into chrysalis and then the adult butterfly. The students had a butterfly release on May 23rd and watched them all fly away.
3/14/19 - Buffalo Museum of Science: AdaptionMrs. Chelsea Ebert's Grade 4 class had a STREAM Field Trip to the Buffalo Museum of Science. The students are learning about "how animals adapt to suit their environment." At the 1st table, they looked at how bugs adapt. At the 2nd table, they used different tools to mimic bird beaks and felt kangaroo fur. At the 3rd table, they practiced echo-location and made fan blades for a wind turbine. This mimicked how whales move through water. After they were done, they had free time to tour the museum. We love the "S" in STREAM!
3/7/19 - Rock CandyStudents in Mr. Stirk's Grade 8 Science class made Rock Candy. The used water, sugar, a hot plate, scale, thermometer & a skewer. Each group had to use the Solubility Curve to figure out how to make a super saturated solution of sugar & water. When the sugar was dissolved, they placed the skewer into the solution and as the water cooled, the sugar was attracted to the stick to form rock candy. Who knew that the "S" in STREAM could also be Sweet!
2/27/19 - UB School of Dental MedicineOn Wednesday, February 27th, Mr. Cody Wiktorski and Miss Rachel Wheaton spent the morning with Miss Darcy Zappia's Grade 3 Class at Southtowns Catholic School. They are part of the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine program. They brought a power point presentation and showed the kids how important it is to take care of their teeth and answered questions about becoming a dentist. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Pictured: Mr. Cody Wiktorski and Miss Rachel Wheaton with Grade 3.
2/14/19 - Math Fraction PizzaStudents in Miss Darcy Zappia's Class made personal pizza's in Math! They rolled the dough, measured their sauce, covered the dough with cheese and then picked what toppings they wanted. The kids used fractions to divide it into parts and then used their knowledge of time to figure out how long to cook them.
2/14/19 - Sweet Science: Dancing Conversation HeartsMrs. Jane Brod's Grade 1 Science class used carbonated water & Effervescent Tablets to make candy hearts dance. The students broke into groups and discussed what they thought was going to happen during the experiment. They put carbonated water (carbon dioxide) & Effervescent Tablets into water and dropped in candy hearts to watch them dance. The "S" in STREAM is showing our students how fun Chemistry can be.
2/11/19 - Kitchen Chem BiscuitsKitchen Chem happens on Mondays in Mrs. Chelsea Ebert's Grade 4 Miss Darcy Zappia's Grade 3 classes. This week, the students took turns measuring and mixing the ingredients for biscuits. When they were done, the kids added butter and jelly. Kitchen Chem is class in our STREAM School.
2/8/19 - Natural Selection in ScienceMr. Sam Stirk's Grade 5 Science class is learning about Natural Selection. He passed out sheets of paper to the students and asked each one to make a paper airplane. The kids got into groups and built what they thought was the best one. When they were done, they took turns flying their planes. If their plane didn't fly or fly far, they had to go back and change their design. Mr. Stirk explained that in nature, organisms adapt to their environment to survive.
2/4/19 - Not a BoxThe Kindergarten Readiness classes read the book "Not a Box" by Antoinette Portis. In the book, the character takes a box and makes all different things with it and it is never just a box. The students then took their boxes and made rocket ships, a dinosaur, a suitcase, a unicorn, a spaceship, a rainbow race car, a stage, a smiley face & a camper. This is part of our STREAM program here at Southtowns Catholic School. What a great way to use their imagination.
1/23/19 - Visit from Aquarium of NiagaraMr. Sam Stirk's STREAM Grades 6 & 7 Science class had a special visitor from the Aquarium of Niagara. Miss Sam Dorsaneo brought squids. She showed the students where the ink sack is and how each squid has a spine. The spine can be used as a quill pen with the ink.
1/11/19 - STREAM "T" is for Technology!1/9/19 - STREAM Lego ClubThe Southtowns Catholic School Lego Club meets once a month to think out of the box and build new things with Legos! The club inspires basic reading, critical-thinking, and building ideas with hands-on activities to create LEGO products that promote imagination, pique curiosity, and enhance learning. The Lego Club is open to all students with an interest in legos and building with friends.
12/2/18 - X STREAM RoboticsOn Sunday, December 2, the Robotics team placed 3rd in the Robotics Competition at St. Joe's. The Robotics team had to build their robot in school and then competed against several other schools at this years X-STREAM Games.
12/2/18 - X STREAM Games Kitchen ChemOn Sunday, December 2, Southtowns Catholic School students from grades 3 & 4 participated in the X-STREAM Games at St Joe's. The Kitchen Chem students presented a yummy monkey bread. They received many compliments on their food, display & presentation. The Monkey Bread was made by the students in Grades 3 & 4 in the Southtowns Catholic kitchen on Friday and given out as samples at the X STREAM Games.
11/12/18 - Grade 2 Mayflower5/23/18 - Kdg Readiness "Sink or Swim"Did you know that our Southtowns Catholic School Kdg Readiness kids participate in STREAM? Today, they made Lego boats and learned balance, buoyancy and team work. Each group was given Legos and a Lego person. Did the boat float or did the Captain have to swim?
5/16/18 - Botanical Gardens & Basilica Mrs. Hill's second grade and Miss Rozwood's first grade spent the day at the Erie County Botanical Gardens and Our Lady of Victory Basilica. The students first visited the Botanical Gardens to create individual terrariums and to tour the beautiful gardens. While creating the terrariums, the students also learned about the different pats of a plant and the water cycle. They ended their day by taking a tour of the Basilica and visiting the Father Baker Museum.

They saw Stellaluna, a stage play adapted from the book by Janell Cannon. Stellaluna is a heartwarming adventure about accepting differences, loving families, and great friendship! 5/2/18 - Grade 6 makes 3D PyramidsMrs. Kristina Dahmer's Grade 6 Social Studies class made 3D Pyramids using a limited number of supplies. The students needed to make their pyramid stable, at least 12" tall, contain three facts about Ancient Egypt written in their own form of hieroglyphics and it had to have an object suspended from the middle of the pyramid that would be something a Pharaoh would need in the afterlife. After the Pyramids were completed, the students measured and calculated the surface area of the Pyramid. This is part of the GEAR UP Design program, that is part of STREAM. The project incorporates a multiple subject area content and pushes students to think "outside the box" to come up with creative solutions to problems. It was a fantastic way to wrap up our unit on Ancient Egypt and have the kids show off their newfound knowledge. Thank you to the English family for your donation of supplies!

4/30/18 - SCS Awarded Grant for Science Lab!Southtowns Catholic School has been approved for the "Upon This Rock" STREAM grant from the Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo. We received the full amount that we requested! It will be used for a science equipment / lab upgrade. Our Science lab will be transformed over the 2018 Summer. We will keep you posted as we make progress. The FRCDB grants committee and board of trustees approved the distribution UTR STREAM funds.

They will be used for all grade levels. Pictured are a few 3rd graders playing the Tangram game. They are arranging tangible puzzle pieces into matching on-screen shapes. In addition to Tangram, we also have words, numbers, a creativity kit, Pizza Company, Coding Jam & Coding Awbie. She is a Grade 1 student in Miss Rozwood's class. Campbell made a volcano, played a video and then demonstrated how it erupts with baking soda, dish soap & water. She even added glitter to give it a little more sparkle.
3/27/18 - Galaxy EggsMrs. Cassi Chudzik's Grade 3 class is learning about the outer space in Science. For STREAM, they made Galaxy Eggs. Each student took a black egg and smudged red, purple & blue paint until it swirled into a galaxy. When it was dry, they used white paint and a tooth pick to add their stars.
3/21/18 - Albright Knox Field TripMrs. Cassi Chudzik's Grade 3 class and Miss Jessica Strozyk's Grade 4 class spent the day at Albright Knox to look at the Niagara Falls exhibit. They were also able to view the "We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women's" exhibit.
https://www.albrightknox.org 3/19/18 - Darwin Martin HouseStudents in Mrs. Walkowski's Grades 6 & 7 Art Classes toured the Darwin Martin House in Buffalo, NY. The took the Art Glass of the Martin House tour: Architecture is art! They Explored the unique art glass windows at the site and created their own art glass template back in the classroom. The Darwin D. Martin House Complex was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built between 1903 and 1905. It was built for Darwin D. Martin, his wife and family
http://www.martinhouse.org 3/16/18 - Erie County Rain BarrelThe Erie County Department of Environment & Planning invited all schools & youth groups in Erie and Niagara counties to participate in a rain barrel painting contest with a theme focusing on stormwater pollution prevention or recycling rainwater. Southtowns Catholic School put together a club to submit a rain barrel. With a group of students from grades 3 to 7, we designed and painted our barrel. When it was finished, each student from preschool 3 to grade 8 placed their thumbprints on the barrel and they were turned into fish. The rain barrel painting contest awards ceremony will be held at 12 noon on Earth Day, Sunday April 22, 2018 in the auditorium at the Buffalo Museum of Science.
3/16/18 - Rainbow BridgeTo celebrate St. Patrick's Day, the students in Mrs. Hill 2nd grade at Southtowns Catholic School built Rainbow Bridges. The students had to work together to create a rainbow bridge that would hold the heaviest pot of gold. They were only allowed to use 8 pipe cleaners and play dough. For the pot of gold, they used pennies and a cup. The winning group's rainbow held 60 pennies
3/9/18 - Dr. Seuss' OobleckMrs. Jennifer Hill's Grade 2 class celebrated Dr. Seuss' Birthday with a STREAM project. The children read the book and then watched a video on the SMART Board on how to make it. The students measured the ingredients of water & cornstarch and then carefully mixed them together. They watched how it changed into Oobleck.

2/27/18 - Junior Achievement of WNY Volunteers Needed2/16/18 - Grade 5 STREAM SlimeMrs. Danielle Long's Grade 5 Math Class made STREAM Slime. The students had to work in teams to complete math problems that gave them the measurements for the ingredients. With glue, water, food, coloring, and borax, the kids used Science, Art & Math to make their slime.
2/5/18 - Bake For GoodOn Monday, February 5th, students in Grade 4 to 7 brought in loaves of bread that they made with the knowledge from their King Arthur Flour demonstration. The bread will be donated to Operation Good Neighbor.
2/1/18 - Buffalo Diocese GALA 22:6Grade 6 students, Kaylee Dodson & Cameron Rogan, were invited to Buffalo Diocese GALA 22:6 on February 1, 2018. They demonstrated their Arcade Academy Games that they invented in their STREAM Class. Kaylee's Game was "Game On" and Cameron's was "Daedalus's Labyrinth". They were chosen based on how entertaining it was to play and how competitive the game was.
1/29/28 - King Arthur FlourOn Monday, January 29th, SCS Students participated in the Bake for Good: Kids Program, and learned math, science, reading, and baking know-how! Each student from Grade 4 to Grade 7 went home with two bags of King Arthur Flour, a BFGK recipe booklet, Red Star yeast, a KAF dough scraper, a bread donation bag and newly learned bread baking skills.

12/15/17 - STREAM Academy EnsembleOn December 15th, SCS debuted the new STREAM Academy Ensemble which focuses on students playing and performing in groups. The piece Ice Breaker was a unique challenge to these instrumentalists, of which only a few were Percussionists. Bucket Drumming ensembles play memorized music with challenging and interesting rhythms that combine to make a diverse soundscape.
12/3/17 - X-Stream Games at St. Joe's held December 3, 2017The fourth-annual X-STREAM Games and Expo, which took place at St. Joe's on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017. The event allows students of all grade levels to compete against others in the ultimate test of what they have learned via their STREAM classes and collaborate with others to show off their creations and months of hard work in their respective schools.
10/31/17 - Grade 2 Goes BattyStudents in Mrs. Jennifer Hill’s Grade 2 class are learning about bats.The kids made a list of bat facts, bat diagrams, measured different wing spans and decorated their Hall Art Board. The students broke into groups and had to make a model of a bat that had to include 2 moving parts, a wingspan of 8 inches, it had to be able to hang upside down and have all the correct body parts.
