On Friday, we honored the men and women in our lives who have served or are currently serving our incredible country. We thank you for your service!
Our day began with Mass celebrated by Fr. Mike, who, if you didn't know, is a veteran of the United States Air Force. We then gathered in the gym for the remainder of our ceremony, where the men and women from Newell—Faulkner American Legion Post 880 joined us. We welcomed back a familiar face with this group, Grandpa Trembath, a Purple Heart recipient. We learned a little about each branch of the military and all of our present veterans were asked to stand while their respective branch song played so we could recognize them. We moved outside for the flag ceremony and gun salute.
We were also lucky enough to have two very special guest speakers in attendance for our ceremony: Legislator John Mills and Ms. Lynn Dixon, Director of Community Relations for the US Congress. Ms. Dixon was also a County Legislator for nine years and served as the Associate Deputy Erie County Comptroller. Legislator Mills spoke to students about what a legislator does for our community. He also presented our school with a proclamation. Ms. Dixon explained to students the importance of voting and how we have our veterans to thank for our freedom. After the ceremony Logan (5th grade) and Alex (4th grade) took Mr. Mills and Ms. Dixon on a tour of Southtowns Catholic School’s classrooms, showing them what students have been working on here.
