Mrs. Grad's 1st grade is finishing their sound wave unit, so the class ran a telephone cup experiment. First, the class tried communicating when the string was loose, which did not work. Then they tried to talk to each other with the string tight, which worked! They had already learned that materials make sounds when they vibrate, so they talked about how the sound waves can travel through the string to the other end when it is tight. They told jokes to each other through the cups!
