CATHOLIC SCHOOLS NETWORK

Dear Parents,

The Catholic School Network, which consists of hundreds of parents in Catholic schools around New York State, has been active for several years. Coordinated by the Catholic Conference in Albany, the CSN has been seeking funding from the government to help parents pay for children’s education and to expand transportation, technology, technology, teacher training and instructional services in our schools.

However, a greater effort is needed for our voice to affect change. It is for this reason that the Catholic Conference has launched a new and exciting statewide Catholic Advocacy Network. The new network will not replace the CSN but will allow the nearly 200,000 families whose children are in Catholic Schools in New York State to be informed about and speak out on other critical issues beyond those related to education.

I strongly encourage you to join the network. You can do so by simply visiting the NYS Catholic Conference website at: www.nyscatholic.org and click on “Join the Network” or by mailing the attached coupon to Catholic Advocacy Network, NYS Catholic Conference, 465 State Street, Albany New York 12203. Feel free to choose any of the interested areas, but please at least check the education box. Please encourage at least your network to join but also as many of the parents in your school and parish.

You can also visit the Legislative Action Center on the Catholic Conference’s website which will enable you to instantly view “Action Alerts,” find your legislator through a zip code lookup, e-mail or write on many critical issues and monitor important legislation.

Directing your child’s education is a fundamental right and responsibility which should be supported by government. Be an active member of the Catholic Advocacy Network and help bring about the many needed changes to New York’s laws.

Thank you for considering to join this Catholic Advocacy Network. Most of the information for the next writing campaign for the Catholic School Network will be coming through this new Catholic Advocacy Network.

Sincerely,

Thomas E. Peters
Assistant Superintendent for
Government Programs

PARENT ADVOCACY PROGRAM

Make Your Voice Be Heard For Our Children

Go to www.nyscatholic.org if you want to participate in the NYS Catholic Parents Advocacy Group to inform your legislators how you wish them to vote.

Department of Catholic Education
Diocese of Buffalo

Dear Parents, Staff and Members of the Catholic School Community,

To help keep our Catholic schools viable and tuitions affordable, we need many people to contact their legislators. To help with this task, so our legislative agenda is heard but it is not real time consuming, the New York State Catholic Conference of Bishops has devised a method known as the Catholic Advocacy Network (CAN). To join this network you only need to have access to the internet and about three minutes of your time that you can devote to filling out the registration form on line.

What does this free membership allow you to do? It gives you action alerts about legislative issues when we need you to contact your legislators. It gives you a letter that will be signed with your name and when you click on “submit ” these letters will go automatically to your elected officials.

As I have stated, it is very easy to join. You first go to the web page of the New York State Catholic Conference which is www.nyscatholic.org. Then you click on “Join The Network” then follow the prompts to give them your name and address etc. and which issues you are concerned with, for schools choose education. This information is extremely confidential; they do not even allow me to see the information. They only will tell me how many have joined the CAN. After you click on “submit” you are all set for a quick process to notify your elected officials about your concerns.

Thank you for taking the time to join the CAN. This is the only way we can make a difference. Please remember that Politicians are as concerned as much with job security as we are. Therefore if 1000 people ask them to vote for an educational issue and 900 are opposed to our issues and only 100 people that support our issues contact them, of course they will vote the way the majority opinion seems to be running. A conservative count for our Diocese is about 20,000 possible votes to support our issues and at the present time we have about 900 that are part of the network from our Diocese. Let’s see if together we can make this number grow.

Sincerely,
