ELA - Mrs. Zahradnik

For over thirty years, I have taught Language Arts and Literature to middle school students.  As a teacher, I believe my strength is a genuine concern for the academic, psychological, and spiritual development of my students.  Each day I look forward to teaching my students at SCS.

The middle school students have been given a project as a final assessment for Social Studies/ELA. The project is due to their homeroom teacher by Thursday, May 24, 2012.  They have a packet of instructions to follow. The students are researching a state of their choice (they picked them already).  After collecting the research they are to design a power point, research paper, or make up a song/rap to explain the information about their state. Once again, this is due May 24.
Along with the project, the students will be making a food of choice and brining a receipe to accompany the dish.  This is called an Ethnic Nosh (TASTE EXTRAVAGANZA).  This part of the project is not due until Wednesday, June 13. This is when we will share the dishes with each other and celebrate our findings.  In the afternoon of the 13th of June, we will also have our Awards Ceremony for the middle school students. If the students have any questions they are to ask their homeroom teachers.

Studying should involve the use of index cards for vocabulary words.  The words should be studied daily since the test is given every two weeks for seventh and eighth grade students.  This is also a good system for learning science and social terms that students are expected to know.

Sixth grade students have spelling tests beginning in February.  There will be twenty words, not ten.

When a student rewrites notes at home, he/she reinforces the material for retention.  Also, rewrite difficult spelling words.

ELA Homework Policy

    WELCOME TO MY CLASSROOM

The purpose of homework is to provide students with a vital learning process where they can independently develop life skills. Homework reinforces learning that has taken place in school, extends knowledge of a subject, it serves to stimulate further investigation of the unknown, and it helps students develop independent work study habits.

Emphasis should be placed on the importance of parents providing the child with a time and place that is conducive to study. Neat and orderly homework is a sign of a conscientious student. It is excellent training and teaches the child responsibility. Failure to complete assignments on time will result in loss of credit towards the child’s grade. If an assignment is late (one day), the student will lose 10 points from the grade.

Homework:  Assignments are to have the proper heading. Answers are to be written in complete statement form. Incomplete statements will be incorrect.

Ribbon Day

New Blog Post.

Seventh grade students have been working on the celebration of Ribbon Day for our Class of 2012.  This will be held on Friday, April 20.  After receiving their ribbons at Mass, the eighth grade class will be enjoying a "feast" that is presented by the parents of the Class of 2013.  I would like to thank the parents for all of their help. Also, thanks go to the teachers who helped me with additional goodies.  Congratulations to the Class of 2012!

New York State Testing

New Blog Post.

When we return from our Easter break, students will begin the New York State ELA Tests.  This test will begin on Tuesday, April 17 through Thursday, April 19.  Please make sure that your child receives rest and the proper nourishment.  This will ensure the best results for the test.
