Buffalo Blast!! The 2012 Buffalo Blast is coming back to Southtowns
Catholic School. Mark your calendars, the event is March 3, 2012. That
is 3 3 1 2. Tickets are $30 and includes
dinner, drinks and 1 chance to win the cash drawings. This year the
cash drawings include a Grand Prize of $2,000, 2nd prize of $250 and 3rd
prize of $150. Doors will open at 6:00. The silent auction also has a
Pandora Bracelet / beads, Vera Bradley Bags, signed jerseys, vacations

Southtowns
Catholic School Buffalo Blast will take place on Saturday, March 3,
2012. This is our “main event” for fundraising and all net proceeds go
back to our school to help keep tuition affordable and to continue
providing our children with a quality education.

Pajama Day at SCS. The students look forward to this day all year. The kids & staff came dressed in their favorite pj's & slippers. Most of the kids brought in a favorite stuffed animal or pillow pet.
Snowflakes
SCS Grade 3 learns about Snowflakes
Mrs. Kristen Chambers
Grade 3 class is learning about Snowflakes and crystals. Each student
got the chance to make a "snowflake". They took 1 cup borax & 6 cups
of boiling water and mixed them together in a glass container. They
made a pipe cleaner snowflake and hung it in the Borax solution
overnight. In the morning the snowflake was hung to dry and everyone got
to see that no two snowflakes are alike. All snowflakes can be found on
the wall outside Mrs. Chambers classroom. Pictured is Michael Smaldino

in your family cross, it's not to late. Crosses will be on display in
the front foyer the rest of the year!
Sabres Chair
Grade 1 had a great time painting in class on January 25. Each child took a
turn painting part of the Buffalo Sabres logo / stripes onto the
Adirondack chair. It will be silent auctioned off at the Buffalo Blast
on March 3. When everyone was done, they all signed their name to the
front of the chair. Tell all you friends & family, this will be a
great addition to anyone's backyard or man cave.
There are only 35 more days until the Buffalo Blast,
did YOU send in your tickets? (tickets went home last week in a white envelope)
Here
is a sneak peak at the Adirondack chair that grade 1 painted today.
Each class from Preschool 3 all the way to Grade 8 is decorating a
chair. We even have a few surprises. On March 3, 2012, each chair will
be sold to the highest bidder in the silent auction.

Teacher of the Week
Our
8th Grade teacher Erica Aikin was honored as Teacher of the Week. Mike
Randall from Channel 7 came to the school and presented her with the
certificate and nomination letter, which was sent by her 8th grade
class. Congratulations Mrs. Aikin!!
Buoyancy
Southtowns Catholic School Grade 3 learns about buoyancy
Mrs.
Kristen Chambers Grade 3 class did a project on Buoyancy. The students
were given a list of instructions and the project had to be created by
them. With a Christmas theme, Santa's sleigh broke down and each child
had to build a boat to get Santa safely across the ocean. The boat had
to be made of recycled material, hold cargo, have a name and of course,
have Santa at the wheel. The kids kept a journal as they built their
boat and turned it in at he end along with the vessel. Pictured here

St. Nicholas delivers Candy Canes
On Wednesday, December
7th, St. Nicholas visited SCS. He went to all the classrooms and passed
out candy canes for all the kids. Pictured here is Grade 2 with their

Santa
Santa Claus came to Southtowns Catholic School!
Santa
& his elves
came to SCS on December 9th. His elves passed out bells and Polar
Express tickets as Santa spent time with each child finding out what
they wanted for Christmas. When
they were done, the students went into the cafeteria and enjoyed hot
cocoa and
cookies that were donated by Petri's.
St Jude
SCS students send presents to
St. Jude's Hospital
First Grade student, Caitlin Jurain wanted to do
something special for St. Jude's Hospital. She told her mom, Cindy and
together they approached Caitlin's teacher, Mrs. Vicki Fabi and asked if
she could ask the class if they would like to help. In an
overwhelming act of generosity and selflessness, the first grade filled
103 gift bags
for the children of St. Jude's Hospital. They also wrote 64 cards that
will go to the doctors and nurses of St. Jude Hospital. It was a fun
service project and the students felt very good about helping other
children. What a proud moment for our teachers and parents. Pictured

Grade 3 Creche
Southtowns Catholic School Grade 3 Creche Project
Mrs. Kristen Chambers, Grade 3
class, had a family assignment to complete. The kids were asked to build
a Creche with the help of their family. When each project was complete,
the student brought in their Creche and displayed it in the front hall

Our Principal, Mrs. MacDonald, celebrated her 10th Anniversary here at Southtowns Catholic School. The students decided the best way to honor her was with everything sweet to eat. The food will be donated to the food bank in her honor. Thank yo everyone for your very sweet donations!
Preschool 4 Thanksgiving
Southtowns Catholic School Preschool celebrates Thanksgiving
Southtowns
Catholic School has 2 preschool classes and both came together to share
Thanksgiving. The MWF class dressed as Native Americans and the Monday
to Friday class dressed as Pilgrims. The hall of the school symbolized
the ocean and the MWF
students crossed it to join the M-F Students. They had a feast of
pumpkin pudding, cornbread, apple juice, fish & popcorn. Pictured
here are all the Native Americans and Pilgrims after they enjoyed their
feast.
Grade 2 Research
Southtowns Catholic School Grade 2 Researches Animals
Each
student in Mrs. Walters Grade 2 class was asked to do a research
project on an animal. They had to choose a favorite animal, bird, fish
or insect. Each student was responsible for preparing a written report
about the animal and creating a diorama showing the animal in its
natural habitat. Pictured here are all the Grade 2 students with their
dioramas.
Corning
Southtowns Catholic School and Corning Museum of Glass
Southtowns Catholic School grades 7 & 8 experienced Corning Museum of Glass as a field trip. The students explored the Museum’s glass collection and interactive exhibitions. They also were able to take colorful glass pieces and arranged them into suncatchers. The Students then watched as the glass
professionals put each piece in the kiln to create a single piece
of glass.
Math Bowl
Southtowns Catholic School Competes in Math Bowl
St. Francis High School hosted a Math Bowl Competition
on Wednesday,
November 9, 2011. Fifteen teams from nine area schools competed as
teams and individuals. Southtowns Catholic eighth grader Shawn Schneider
placed first out of 82 students winning first place individual honors.
The team from
Nardin Academy 2 took home the first place team trophy,
followed by The Nardin Academy 1 team in second place and the team from
Southtowns Catholic placed third in the team competition.
" El Dia de los Muertos"
Southtowns Catholic School
celebrated " El Dia de los Muertos"
Southtowns Catholic School JR High Spanish classes celebrated "El Dia de los Muertos" on November 1 and
2, El dia de los Muertos or Day of the dead is a Hispanic Holiday
that honors the faithfully departed, it is not a sad time but a time to
celebrate the lives of those who have passed on. Pictured are
Christina Billittier and Madelyn DiMartino holding their "ofrendas" or
altars honoring a loved one. Other projects completed were movie
posters, research papers and
Calaveras
( skeletons) decorated to honor the holiday.
Stranger Danger
Southtowns Catholic School Learns Stranger Danger
SCS Third,
Fourth, and Fifth grade students gathered together to learn a life long lesson
on "STRANGER DANGER". Mr. Butch Klawon of United World of Martial Arts
in Hamburg , came
to Southtowns Catholic and taught the students valuable, hands-on tips
on stranger awareness, protection and safety. Students demonstrated
their understanding by role playing various situations involving
screaming, running, and self defense. While the presentation was fun, it
was also meaningful and eye opening for all!

Veteran's Day
Southtown's Catholic School celebrates Veteran's Day
There are 24 million Veterans and
Active Duty Military in our nation,
and each one deserves a Thank You. Southtowns Catholic School did just
that and wrote Thank You Cards to our Veteran's. Miss Diane's
Kindergarten, Mrs. Fabi's Grade 1 and Mrs. Walters Grade 2 class got
together and wrote cards to Veterans. When the cards were done, they
were packed up and sent to
Applebee's Restaurant as part of their "Thank you" Movement. The "Thank
You" Movement gives everyone an opportunity to personally say
Thank You in their own way…via the Web site, a Tweet, Post on Facebook,
YouTube or card. And Veterans and Active Duty Military will get to
experience a well-deserved Thank You from a grateful nation.
Every year on Veterans Day, our heroes are honored for their service,
their bravery and their commitment to our nation. For the past two
years, Applebee’s has honored our nation’s military with more than two
million free thank-you meals on Veterans Day.

Southtowns Catholic School celebrated Student of the Month for September & October at Mass today. The Students that best demonstrated "Diligence" were picked for their achievement.

What a PARTY!!!

had a pumpkin carving contest, costume contests, a parade, a haunted
hallway, games, crafts, food & more. A special thanks to everyone who
helped set up, take down, donated decorations, helped with food, helped
with the door, helped with games & helped with crafts. Look for a

Dave Rychlik, the Hit Man, he had everyone moving & grooving all
evening!

National Junior Society
On Friday, September 30, 2011 Southtowns Catholic School inducted six new membe...rs
into the National Junior Honor Society during Friday Mass. National
Junior Honor Society is a nationally renowned organization that has set
the standard of academic excellence for Junior High and High School
students across the country. In order to be eligible, the students must
exhibit qualities such as Scholarship, Service to others, Citizenship,
Leadership and good character. Under the advisement of Mrs. Ann Cooper,
the members of NJHS will continue to exhibit these qualities through
various activities throughout the year in their school and community.

These six students join 15 other students to make up

Halloween came early
Southtowns Catholic School celebrated Halloween early on October 28th. Every class had a party with crafts, games and plenty of gummy worms. Preschool to Grade 2 had a parade through the gym and then went on to walk through Grades 3, 4 & 5. As you can see, the students had a great time. SCS is Drug Free!!
Southtowns Catholic School kicked off drug free week with a special visit from Buffalo Bills Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. He landed in the Sheriff helicopter in the school parking lot! A very special thank you to Mrs. Chambers, Mr. Bevilacqua, Mr. Wright, the K9 Unit, the Sheriff Department, Captain Kevin Caffery, the SWAT team, Under Water Rescue Team, the Army, the DEA and State, Evans, Buffalo & Hamburg Police Departments.
Field Trip
On October 5th, Southtowns Catholic School Grades K, 1 & 2 spent the
day at Chiavetta's Produce Stand & Farm. The kids learned where
potatoes are grown and how they are harvested. The day was spent
decorating pumpkins, playing in a bounce house, making a carrot
bookmark, collecting little potatoes, listening to a story and going on a
vegetable scavenger hunt. Thank You so much to Kelli, Mike & their
whole crew for putting together such a great day!!!!
